Unmetered Content

About the Unmetered Content

Internode offers a set of data sources to our Broadband ADSL and Wireless customers which are 'un-metered' (which some people loosely call 'free' - but we don't).

These un-metered sites are provided in order to enhance the opportunities to use your Internode Broadband ADSL service with a lowered likelihood of receiving any 'excess usage' charges.

Please note that Internode provides unmetered data sources as a value-added service for customers. The provision of unmetered data access is entirely at the discretion of Internode. The availability of this facility and the list of unmetered data sources available may be varied or withdrawn by Internode in the future.

Please check the IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS FACILITY on this page before using these services.

  • Internode Major Geeks Mirrors (+)

Note: to source unmetered downloads from Major Geeks, you must go to the Major Geeks website and select the file you wish to download, then select the Internode Download mirror.
  • Internode Steam Content Servers (^)

Internode operates a public Steam Content Server (see http://www.steampowered.com for more information about Steam). This server provides automated and convenient software/patch updating services for a variety of current online games.

Access to these updates is unmetered for Internode customers when you use the Internode Steam cluster for your game patch downloads - please note, your Steam client may auto-select another Steam server outside of the Internode network. We cannot control or guarantee that you will always receive your updates from the Internode Steam cluster. If you download Steam updates from another cluster or server, these will count toward your usage.
  • Limited ABC Online content (##)

Note: Abc.net.au content is unmetered only where it is provided directly on the data links operated by the ABC from their primary data centre in Sydney, NSW.

Due to changes at the ABC, most ABC generated content is now provided by third party content distribution network service providers. As a result, it is no longer possible for Internode to offer a generally 'unmetered' service to ABC Online content.

Any ABC content that does continue to come directly from the ABC data centre, will remain 'unmetered'. However, customers should assume at this point that any content downloaded from http://www.abc.net.au related sites is now metered content in the main - with only minor exceptions.

Internode apologises for the changes in unmetering of ABC Online content, however it is due to circumstances beyond our control.

  • Access to the Internode accounts information and support request sites is also un-metered, including data access to check your usage with any of the several usage meters available for use with Internode ADSL.

This means that you don't increase your usage when you use your service to check your current usage level...!

For people interested in gory IP address details behind the above, the current list of un-metered site IP addresses is available here.

Important Information about Un-Metered Sites

Un-Metered access is offered to the sites noted above, for all HOME and SOHO ADSL and Wireless customers, and for most Business ADSL customers (subject to an important caveat for Business ADSL customers, as noted below).

  • The un-metering facility will not work if you use a web access 'proxy'. If you access un-metered sites using a web proxy, all resulting usage will be metered.
  • Please note that access to these sites from other (non-ADSL or Broadband Wireless [Unwired]) forms of Internode access links currently remains metered (and contributes to assessed download totals). This un-metering feature is only available for Internode ADSL customers. This is due to some data measuring technology limitations present at this time.
  • Access to un-metered sites will initially appear in your measured usage totals, and will then be 'wound back' off of your usage meter afterward. HOME/SOHO ADSL and Wireless usage is normally adjusted for un-metered access within a few hours of the access concerned.
  • Internode is not responsible for metering of downloads which may occur if you inadvertently link to a site which is external to the un-metered site list. It is your responsibility to ensure that your downloads are sourced from an un-metered site, in order to gain the benefits of this feature.
  • The un-metering facility is a value-added feature of Internode Broadband services. Internode reserves the option to vary the benefits offered by this feature in the future.
  • Under some circumstances (and as minimally as we can possibly manage), we may need to constrain access to some un-metered sites via rate shaping, during periods of intense demand. This applies especially to file servers in the un-metered site list. Customers requiring faster access to such sites are advised to consider downloading the required data from an alternative (metered) site if faster access is required.
  • The list of un-metered sites is subject to change over time. It is important, before undertaking any large quantity of data downloading from these sites, that you reconfirm that your intended source site is in the currently configured list of un-metered sites. While in general we expect that the list will grow, rather than shrink, we may need to remove sites from this list in future. So please come back and re-check this web site whenever you wish to make sure that your notion of 'un-metered' is still the accurate one.
  • FOR INTERNODE BUSINESS ADSL CUSTOMERS: Business ADSL access to un-metered sites is only available when accessing the sites using the static IP addresses that Internode assigns directly your Business ADSL service (either 1 address or 5, depending on the option that you have ordered). The un-metered sites feature DOES NOT WORK if you access these sites using any additional static IP address ranges routed to your location using a GRE/IP tunnel. Access from such 'additional' IP address ranges does NOT benefit from this un-metering facility, and access to the abovementioned sites WILL be metered under this specific circumstance.
